Ma che una band non riesca a suonare dal vivo perchè uno dei membri è un soldato di stanza in Iraq non l'avevo mai sentita. Accade ai Cobalt, duo americano che bazzica nel giro dello US Black Metal nella stessa cerchia di Nachtmystium, Krallice e Wolves in the throne room.
E il segno di questi tempi moderni del fatto che 'non sei nessuno se non sei su YouTube' è che non c'è uno straccio di video neanche amatoriale sui Cobalt, non mi risulta abbiano mai suonato dal vivo ed è già un miracolo che qualche mese fa sia uscito il loro terzo album Gin per Profound Lore.
Gin lo sto consumando parecchio ed è una gran fortuna sia riuscito ad uscire. I Cobalt li mettono nel calderone dello USBM ma di BM i Cobalt di Gin hanno solo una certa struttura fatta dei soliti archetipi. Per il resto si muovono a più ampio respiro verso articolate partiture prog e acustiche che richiamano addirittura dei Tool primordiali.
Insomma non partono in quarta dall'inizio alla fine ma ci ragionano su infognandosi verso il basso in circuiti infernali e sulfurei che solleticano le orecchie.
Si diceva che sono un duo, il soldato Phil McSorely prestato alla voce e il tuttofare Erik Wunder. Quindi quando il primo urla rabbia autentica e il secondo si da fare benissimo per costruirci attorno un clima oppressivo. Nell'intervista fatta per Decibel Magazine (qui un estratto) alle domande sulla sua attività militare Phil rispondeva così:
The last time I talked to Erik, about a year ago, he mentioned that you had about a year left in your time with the Army. Are you indeed close to being finished, or will you be serving for longer?
<><><>I reenlisted for 5 more years. I fucking love the Army and I am an excellent Soldier. This is where I belong, in another country with a gun in my hand.
What has been your specific job during your time in Iraq? Or are you not allowed to divulge that?
<><><>I am a Sergeant in the US Army. I am a Scout, which is a forward type of combat arms element. I am stationed in Baghdad and it is a great place to be if you like explosions. Other than that I will keep my details to myself in the interest of operational security.
Just how dangerous has it been for you over there?
<><><>I will put it this way, 90% of people in Iraq are on huge camps called FOB's with huge intertwined security systems and people there don't have a thing in the world to be worried about. I, on the other hand, have spent 3 days on a FOB in the last few months and am living IN the population and gunfire and explosions are heard every day where I sleep. The threat is very real but we are prepared.
How rewarding has your time with the Army been overall?
<><><>It is the best decision I ever made in my life. Politics aside, this is the natural state of man. Fighting the enemy, combat to survive. I have put my money where my mouth was when I named our first album War Metal. I don't have any politics, I don't care. This is reality, everyone else is living in Pepsi-land.
